if you’re like me, you’ve always wondered just how much money the top family vloggers and mom influencers are making. I’m kind of obsessed with the question – if family influencing is a multibillion dollar industry, how much money are these people making?
I asked an expert during research for my book – let’s get into it.
the first family I asked about was the labrant family (12.9 million subscribers on youtube and 12 million followers on youtube just between the parents). if you don’t know anything about the labrant family, here’s a quick explanation: mom savannah had daughter everleigh as a teen and when everleigh was just a few years old, savannah met and married cole labrant (of dem white boyz fame on vine – no, I’m not kidding) and the labrants entered their family vlogging era
the labrants are almost impossibly blonde and very, very religious (cole just posted an endorsement of trump that included a photo of him “praying over” the former president) and they’re also really, really popular (part of which is probably owing to the fact that they have a new baby almost every 18 months and the algorithms love babies). when I ask the influencer marketing expert how much money the labrants make a year, she says they’re in the $3 million range. THREE. MILLION. DOLLARS. should I become a family vlogger???
I also asked about maia knight, mom of twins scout and violet, who rose to tiktok fame showing day-in-the-life videos of life as a single mom of twins. maia now doesn’t show her daughters’ faces on tiktok or instagram or anywhere online that’s public but she still has 7.8 million tiktok followers, which leads to estimated annual earnings, my source tells me, of between $3 to $5 million. THREE TO FIVE MILLION DOLLARS. again: should I become a mom influencer??? although I have literally none of the skills needed (ability to cook from scratch ((or at all)), desire to stay at home, need to raise my own chickens and get eggs from them for breakfast).
and for tippy-top family vloggers like family fun pack (who I interviewed for my book – stay tuned for that!! I talked to both the mom and the kids) who have 10.3 million subscribers on youtube? “they’re making 8 million a year,” my source says.
this is the thing – when we talk about family vlogging and the mom influencing and the ethical concerns, we cannot ignore the money. and it is a lot of money. more than even I would’ve expected. and it makes the calculus more complicated when parent creators are deciding whether to continue down the path of family vlogging – there are so few careers where people can make this kind of money.
I think of this especially when I’m interviewing subjects like the single mother who told me she never went to college and now makes $500,000 a year influencing. part of her wants to stop, she says, but there’s no other world in which she could make that much money and provide for her kids. talk about golden handcuffs.
